What is the Teacher Strainer?

Whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a babysitter, chances are you have probably found yourself in the annoying or uncomfortable situation when a word or situation has popped up in the book you're child is reading that you would rather not have to discuss with them.  The idea for this blog popped up because as an elementary school teacher, I spend a lot of time reading children's books to see if they are OK for my classroom.  I get so frustrated when I have wasted my time reading a chapter book geared towards children only to find half way through there is something in the book that would prevent me from reading it to my class.  I wanted to start a list that I can look at when my student's ask me for recommendations, and I thought why not make it a list that all my friends and family can look at as well?  I'm all about sharing :)

Having said that, every parent and every child is different.  What is appropriate for one child may not be appropriate for the next.  One parent's opinions on what is inappropriate differs from the next.  So what's The Teacher Strainer?  Whenever I read a book geared towards children I will "strain out" all of the stuff that may make a parent raise an eyebrow.  I will not give a recommendation on whether or not the book is appropriate for your child (that is for you to decide), but I will present what I found to help you better make the decision that is right for your family or classroom.

On a side note, I presented my idea to my sister who is also a teacher, and she added the idea of doing kids movies as well, so look out for that too.
